The Macintosh Portable was Apple's first attempt at making a portable Mac. Released in 1989, it was received with excitement from most critics but with very poor sales to consumers. 22 hours ago Mac upgrade specialist OWC today announced the Envoy Pro, a tiny and portable USB-C SSD that starts at $99. The Envoy Pro can reach up to 1011MB/s speeds, enough to. Mac OS6 and OS7: Notes: Apple was fairly late to the laptop scene and the Macintosh Portable was their initial offering. The Apple Mac Portable in my collection is in great physical shape but it fails to boot (comes up with a sad Mac when it comes up at all.) It's going to need some help down the line.

(Submitted October 26, 2010 14:57:22 by Ben Fleet) Anyone have a Mac Portable to sell? If so: - model # - cosmetic condition, inside and out -- cracks, scratches, chips, discolorations, blemishes, rust, corrosion - any missing pieces or parts, inside and out? - keyboard, trackball function (how do they depress and roll if computer won't boot?) - if bootable, do all the keys and trackball work normally? - screen function, quality - price + shipping/handling?
Put it on eBay with photos?
Thanks, Ben

Mine had, like, 6 hours worth of battery life. with backlight blazing. Closer to 8-9 with it off. It had a hyyyuuuuge lead-acid battery that was easy to swap, too, as it had a 9-volt to keep the RAM going in sleep mode.
There were 3rd-party 8mb memory cars available for it, and a modem card. Vocal recording software for mac. The trackball was truly above par in terms of feel and sensitivity - I doubt it's equal has been made. They keyboard was nice, too, but I hated the Apple arrow-key layout.
Note - the monitor port in the back was completely non- functional and would blow the MB if you tried to hook something up to it.

The later revision of the Portable added back lighting to the LCD. If I recall, the machine won't boot without the battery present, but it's been years since I played with one..

Very poor battery life and no backlight made it less useful. But the introduction of the powerbook series put that right. Love it, great site, showing my kids al the old kit we used in the 80s..

The first compact Mac. Introduced in 1989, the Portable was essentially a fast Macintosh SE desktop computer with a floppy disk and optional 40MB hard disk. It had a 16 MHz Motorola 68000 CPU, 1MB of RAM and monochrome LCD screen. Not terribly popular, the machine was heavy and cost USD $6,500. Although more compact than the desktop SE, the 16-pound Portable weighed only about a pound less because of its heavy lead acid battery. (Image courtesy of NeonCluster.com.) |
